Good Fruit, Bad Fruit
I once read this quote by one of my idols, Imogen Cunningham:
“I photograph anything that can be exposed to light. The reason during the twenties that I photographed plants was that I had three children under the age of four to take care of so I was cooped up. I had a garden available and I photographed them indoors.”
With two young kids at home at the time, and similar habits, I remember feeling so vindicated by this story. I have always been compelled to photograph mundane objects around the house that most people would pass by, or even, gasp, throw in the trash. At some point, I progressed past the interest of working on lighting my fresh, ripe subjects and turned my attention to the process of decomposition. I know this collection won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but I’m hoping there are a few of you out there that also have a soft spot for moldy avocado. Good Fruit, Bad Fruit has been an ongoing series since 2002.
